There are many ways to see Europe. One of my favourite ways to enjoy a city/town/village, and save a bit of cash, is to enjoy a picnic while watching the local happenings. It’s a great way to get a feel for the place, sit back, and appreciate the scenery while watching the locals as they go about their day.
Here’s a list of my favourite picnic spots where you can enjoy some prime people watching, get back to nature or take in a famous landmark on the cheap.
Lauterbrunnen – Switzerland.
Whilst travelling through to europe, I was lucky enough to gain work here for 5 weeks, so got to explore and really appreciate this little Swiss village. Grab a morning coffee at one of the few shops, pack some snacks and trek to the end of the valley. (This is really not far, but well worth the walk, as it’s one of the most stunning natural towns I’ve seen.) Choose a spot just off the walking track by the river and take in the fresh air.
Trust me you’ll feel like Heidi in no time.
Kirchberg in Tirol – Schwarzsee, Austria.
Famous for it’s winter seasons, Kirchberg in Tirol, which is two hours by train from the Munich border, is also beautiful during the summer. Popular with hikers, this friendly town is lovely and green, and makes a perfect picnic location. The Schwarzsee (meaning black lake) is a great spot to picnic, just bring a rug, some local speck and cheese and enjoy the serenity. If you get hot, why not cool off in the lake for a swim!
Plitvice Lakes – Croatia.
Quite possibly the most stunning lakes i’ve ever seen and well worth the journey to this Croatian national park. After walking around the huge lakes, and taking it the scenery, pick a spot by the water and kick back with a good book. The perfect place to relax.
Parc Guell, Barcelona- Spain
If you hadn’t yet noticed the Gaudi influence within Catalonian architecture, his quirky masterpiece ‘Parc Guell’ is sure to keep you entertained for a while. Either sit at the roof top and enjoy the view of the city, or pick a spot near the colorful gardens to take in this distinct, ‘Alice in wonderland’ like park.
If you’re after a truly awesome picnic spread, head past Mercado de la Boqueria, off Las Ramblas on your way, for an amazing choice of tasty treats.
Vondelpark, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Vondelpark is a great place to take a picnic, and is very popular with locals and tourists alike. Complete with lush grenery, a serene lake, ‘whomping willow’ trees, and a walking/riding track, grab a bike and come chill out here out for an afternoon in the sunshine.
