In many childhood fairytales, narrators describe a place where the earth meets the sky – a place where heaven is sold as the joining of clouds to the edge of the earth; and where people go for peaceful contemplation. After discovering Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni – I think I found this place!
Salar de Uyuni, or better known the salt flats, are popular with travellers on the tourist trail, but no so known outside of South America.
Best seen over a few days, the landscape is so diverse and colourful, you really need to commit to at least three days to cover a decent area of land.
With landscape varying from salty plains of endless white terrain, to hot springs and rainbow maintains, it really is a place you have to see to fully appreciate.
We decided to do a 4WD tour with a few travellers we met in the local town, and were so pleased we chose this option, as it makes it a lot easier to get around.
If you’re considering going to South America – add this destination to your list, as it’s a must see for all nature loving gringos.
