Koh Rong is Cambodia’s best kept secret.
Located just 2 hours from the popular beachside town Sihanoukville, the island relies on generators to power the few bungalows and bars that make up the main tourist area. It’s a super relaxed, minimal place – perfect to chill out for a few days away and unwind.
Getting there is as easy as a 2 hour speed boat journey, (or theres a cheaper 4 hour rickety fishing boat if you’re on a tight budget) which takes you directly the islands main tourist area.
Accommodation is simple but nice (apart from a few opulent hotels, designed for honeymooners) with a few great bungalows to choose from. The island is still quiet and unspoilt, as tourists have only been visiting since the first hotel was built 2010.
In order to see the island’s true beauty, you need to get away from the main area. Walk to the end of the beach, (left if facing the water) through a leafy track, before arriving at a stunning secluded beach. Keep walking past this beach as you will come to an entire open bay of aqua blue ocean. Find a shady spot under the trees, chill out with a good book, and forget all your worries! We were there for about 4 hours, and only saw 2 other people the entire time we were there, so it’s definitely a place where you’ll feel like you’re in ‘Castaway’.
Koh Rong is quickly becoming a must do on the Cambodian tourist trail, so get there now before this spectacular island paradise becomes overcrowded.
